Lake Gkula maintenance happens every year, and every second year, both wetlands need to be fully flushed and ‘cleaned’. This means we need to lower the water levels in the lake by quite a bit and flush the wetlands to get rid of the nasties (pollutants like make-up, muddy feet, things we put on our bodies, etc) 

As part of the maintenance project, we will have a few fit and strong people on hand to move heavy things like pumps and hoses around. Of course, we could always use a few extra hands to help out with some of the other tasks involved in caring for the lake. 

These include: 

• Cutting back plants and macrophytes in wetlands which are doing a great job of filtering the water of nutrients (excess ones) 

• Helping to move on the crustaceans, fishes and other waterborne creatures back into the lake 

• General tidying up the wetlands so they look beautiful 

Overall, the work will be intermittently busy which means some downtime to stare out at the lake and imagine all the people enjoying a refreshing swim at the Festival. It’s also quite fun and really interesting to see how the lake works.
