“I’m conscious of the old adage that it’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” — Professor Ian Lowe

If you haven’t already, it’s well worth catching our recent episode with Professor Ian Lowe AO — one of Australia’s most respected environmental scientists, and a genuine Woodfordia institution in his own right. Now 83, Ian brings together forty years of work on climate and sustainable futures (including a term as President of the Australian Conservation Foundation and authorship of ten books) with a lifelong connection to this place, having planted a hoop pine at the first Woodford Folk Festival that now stands twenty metres tall. He was also recently appointed inaugural Chair of the new Woodfordia Foundation.

The conversation ranges from dodgy cricket umpiring to the fate of the planet, often in the same breath — touching on the accidental origins of the Greenhouse tent, the $2.66 million raised so far toward the $5 million land buyback, and what it means to take on a responsibility measured in centuries rather than election cycles. It’s a great example of the kind of conversation we’re hoping to continue with more Woodfordia leaders and long-time contributors.
