Coopers Bar Andrew Veivers

*This is an intensive workshop run over multiple days.
The birthplace of the Flamenco art form is the southern Spanish province of Andalucia.
This beautiful, rich and exotic sounding music has a long and intriguing history that stretches back many centuries and is a culmination of influences from around the world. This series of workshops will be looking at the engine room of flamenco guitar technique. Welcome to:
The Mysterious Right Hand (left handers, you know what to do)
Pulgar, Picado, Arpegio, Rasgueado and Alzapúa - What are they? How do you pronounce them? Are they easy to learn? Must I only apply them to flamenco music? Is Arpegio a typo? I could have sworn it was spelt with two ‘g’s!?! Whether you approach this workshop series with altruistic flamenco ideals or you just want to add that ‘flamenco touch’ to your current repertoire… perhaps that Bee Gees solo arrangement needs a little lift or your version of Billie Eilish’s When The Party’s Over is singing out for a rumba back beat… these five right hand techniques are fundamental in creating the flamenco sound.

The Dawn Light is an exciting new project by Angela Iimura and OJ Newcomb (John Butler Trio, Afro Dizzi Act, Band of Frequencies), with Brodie Graham on guitar. After many years of deeply connecting with the profound verses of the great mystic poets - Hafiz and Francis Brabazon - Angela began to use their poems as lyrics, writing songs that could be described as a dear companion to the human spirit, shedding beams of light, joy and inspiration onto the path of life. To share the love, Angela teamed up with her husband and musical partner OJ to bring to life ’The Dawn Light’, named after one of Francis Brabazon’s poems.

A Village Called A Village Called

*This is an intensive workshop run over multiple days.
Select a lot, grab some pallets and start making - It’s up to you what you create. This is your town! Participants will use hand saws, screw guns, drills, and a drop saw in the carpentry kit as well as measuring, marking, and PPE gear. Villagers can make flags, bunting, curtains, and can lend out paint to decorate their structures. On the last day the villagers open up the gates to invite visitors in for an open mic event of their design. In all instances the facilitators are there to keep work safe, but not to interfere with the creativity and agency of the builders. Ages 10 - 17

Oh Harlow jumped into the music world under the name ‘The Dennis Sisters’ four years ago. Passionate about country music, but determined not to box in their creativity, the sister duo have been honing their song-writing craft and refining their sibling harmonies to create their own genre-crossing original music. Their music highlights this with influences from Americana, country, folk and pop in each catchy new song they create. With Tiana on guitar and Briannah on bass, the Sunshine Coast girls began writing in their early teens after a long period of chronic illness which prevented them from attending school. This health journey in their youth gave them maturity beyond their years, which is showcased in their songs through their storytelling. The duo released their debut single Give It A Miss in late 2019 and since has reached no. 3 on the Music Network Australian Country Airplay chart and won Country Work of the Year at the 2020 Queensland Music Awards.

High-energy duo Hat Fitz and Cara are among Australia’s most talented roots music artists. The husband and wife team have clocked up 10 years of worldwide touring, festival performances and album releases and are showing no signs of slowing down. Their modern blend of old-timey-influenced sounds is equally at home in a variety of settings from folk or Americana stages to blues and acoustic venues. While the singer/songwriters are both multi-instrumentalists, it’s Fitzy’s weathered vocals and soaring blues-soaked guitar combined with Cara’s pounding drums and soulful voice that show them at the peak of their creative power. Fitzy served his musical apprenticeship in the 1980s touring around Western Queensland playing the show circuit with his father’s band alongside boxing tent shows and rodeos. Meanwhile Cara was growing up in a commune on the other side of the world, living a gypsy lifestyle around various parts of the Northern Ireland coast. Winners of Blues Album Of The Year at the 2013 Australian Chain Awards and UK Spiral Earth, Hat Fitz and Cara also won Best Vocal Of The Year at the 2015 Chain Awards and were finalists in the 2015 Memphis International Blues Challenge in the USA.

You will be added to workshop guestlist after opting in.
